 Lathe Tailstock
Having a problem with my Delta Midi Lathe?

I’ve had it for about two years. Everything is in perfect condition except the tailstock. The wheel that turns to extend the tailstock slowly is really really stiff and difficult to turn, even when I have no wood mounted. It’s difficult in both directions.

I have checked, and it’s not some obvious problem (i.e. forgetting to loosen the bolt that locks it when it’s in position or something). Possibly it just needs to be cleaned out and greased.

So if that’s the case, which type of grease/oil should I use?

If the wheel is difficult to turn, and as you’ve said, you’ve checked for all of the obvious stuff, the mechanism has probably just become clogged with old grease and sawdust. Take it apart, clean all the parts and lubricate it.

Typically, you’d use a light machine oil for the quill and a small amount of lithium grease for the threads. Here are instructions for tailstock care. Sorry – not your exact model, but it should be about the same procedure.
